Kinds of smoker boxes
There are two main types. Drop-in or loose smoker boxes are perforated stainless boxes you fill with wood chips and set on the grates or heat plates. There's not much to repair on those beyond replacing a rusted or warped box. Built-in smoker drawers are found on many premium built-ins from brands like Lynx, DCS, Fire Magic and Alfresco. They have a chip drawer that slides into the firebox, often with a dedicated burner and knob underneath to get chips smoking without running the main burners hot.
This page is mostly about the built-in kind. If you have a standalone smoker, see our smoker, griddle and pizza oven service.
Common smoker box problems
Most frequent first.
Smoker burner won't light
Spiders and debris in its small burner tube, a dirty igniter, or a thermocouple problem on models with flame safety.
Learn moreLights but chips won't smoke
Burner flame too weak, ash packed in the drawer, or the drawer not sitting right over the burner.
Drawer rusted or stuck
Ash and moisture combine into a corrosive paste. Drawers rust, warp and seize.
Learn moreBurner rusted out
The smoker burner sits under ash and grease and rusts through.
Goes out after lighting
On burners with a thermocouple, a dirty or failed sensor won't hold the gas valve open.
Learn moreWhat you can safely do
- Empty ash out of the smoker drawer after every use. Wet ash is what causes most of the corrosion.
- With the grill off and cool, slide out the drawer and look at the burner beneath it for rust or debris.
- Use dry chips or soak them briefly. Waterlogged chips smother the flame and leave sludge.
- Make sure the drawer slides fully into place. A drawer that sits crooked won't get hot enough to smoke.
- When lighting the smoker burner, hold the knob in for the full time the manual says if it has a push-and-hold knob.

Smoker care
The single most useful habit is emptying the ash every time. After that, give the smoker burner a few minutes of use now and then even if you're not smoking, to keep spiders out. Our smoker maintenance guide covers both built-in drawers and standalone smokers. A regular grill cleaning includes the smoker drawer and its burner.
Smoker box questions
Should I soak wood chips before using them?
It's debated. Soaked chips smolder slower but take longer to start smoking. Briefly soaked or dry chips both work. Waterlogged chips mostly make steam and sludge.
Why won't my chips smoke?
Usually the smoker burner isn't hot enough because of a blockage, the drawer is packed with old ash, or the drawer isn't seated over the burner.
Can I add a smoker box to a grill that doesn't have one?
A drop-in smoker box works on most gas grills. Built-in smoker drawers are part of the grill's design and usually can't be added later.
Can rusted smoker drawers be replaced?
Often, yes. Many brands still sell replacement drawers. For older or discontinued grills, it depends on availability.
How much does smoker box repair cost?
It depends on the brand and what parts it needs. Send photos and the model number for a quote.
