A grill that won't light, runs hot on one side, flares up or smells like gas usually has one of a handful of causes. The pages below walk through each problem in the order techs see them, from the simple (a dead ignition battery, a spider web in a burner tube) to the parts that wear out (igniters, burners, valves, regulators).
Anything involving a gas leak or a valve should be left to a pro. If you smell gas, start with our gas smell page. For everything else, our techs diagnose on site and carry common parts, so most repairs are finished in one visit.
A lot of repair calls turn out to be cleaning problems in disguise. Grease on an igniter electrode, carbon packed into burner ports and a clogged drip path cause more trouble than failed parts do, which is why we usually clean the parts we touch during a repair. To know what happens on the day, read what to expect on a repair visit.
