How grill hoods are held up
Smaller grills use simple pin hinges and rely on the hood's balance to stay open. Larger built-ins usually have an assist system: torsion springs, coil springs, or counterweights at the back that take most of the hood's weight so it lifts easily and stays where you leave it. Brands like Lynx, Twin Eagles, Hestan, Alfresco and DCS each do it their own way.
Handles bolt to the hood through brackets or standoffs, and they're the part people grab every cook. The hardware loosens, strips or corrodes over time.
Common problems, most frequent first
Hood won't stay open
Worn or broken assist springs, or springs that have lost tension. On some designs, a worn stop or pivot.
Hood slams shut
Same root cause. A hood slamming on heavy stainless can dent it and stress the hinge mounts.
Hood sits crooked or gaps
Bent hinges, loose mounting bolts, or a hood that was dropped. Gaps let heat and smoke escape.
Loose or wobbly handle
Bolts backed out from heat cycling, stripped threads, or cracked standoffs.
Squeaking or grinding
Dry or corroded pivot points, common on coastal grills.

What you can safely check
- With the grill cool, open and close the hood slowly. Note whether it's heavier than it used to be or drops from a certain point.
- Look at the back of the hood for visible springs or arms. A broken spring is often obvious.
- Check the handle bolts. If they're accessible from inside the hood, a snug-up with the right tool may fix a wobble.
- Look for gaps along the sides when the hood is closed.
- Listen for grinding at the hinges. A light dab of high-temperature lubricant on visible pivots can help squeaks.
How we repair hoods and handles
- 1
Identify the system
We figure out exactly how the hood is supported on your model, and match springs, hinges or handle hardware to it.
- 2
Support the hood
The hood is secured or removed before springs are released, so nothing drops.
- 3
Replace worn parts
Springs, hinge pins, bushings, handles and standoffs are replaced as needed.
- 4
Align
The hood is adjusted so it closes evenly and seals along the sides.
- 5
Test
We open and close it repeatedly to confirm it lifts smoothly, stays open and closes without slamming.
Dents and stainless finish
Small dents on stainless hoods can sometimes be eased out from behind, but heavy creases usually stay. Scratches and staining on hoods respond well to stainless polishing. If a hood is badly damaged, a replacement hood may be available for your model, and if it isn't, the question becomes whether to repair or replace the grill. A grill that's had a hard life often has several of these problems at once, which is where restoration comes in.
Hood and handle questions
Why does my grill hood keep slamming?
The springs or counterbalance that take the hood's weight have worn out or broken. Replacing them brings back the controlled lift.
Can I replace hood springs myself?
On some small grills it's simple. On heavy built-in hoods, the springs are under a lot of tension and the job can be dangerous without the right steps. We recommend having a tech do it.
My handle gets hot. Is that normal?
Most handles stay cool enough to grab, but metal handles on some grills get warm with the hood closed for long periods. If yours is much hotter than it used to be, the standoffs may be damaged or the grill may be running unusually hot.
Can a crooked hood affect cooking?
Yes. Gaps let heat escape, making the grill slower to preheat and harder to hold temperature.
How much does hood or hinge repair cost?
It depends on the brand and which parts are needed. Send photos of the hood and hinges and your model number for a quote.
