How we approach a repair

Most grill problems have a short list of likely causes, and a good tech works through them in order instead of guessing. A grill that won't light is usually a dead battery, a cracked electrode or a burner port packed with spider webs, long before it's a failed valve. A weak flame is more often a regulator that has tripped into bypass mode or a clogged orifice than a bad burner. We test before we replace, and we tell you what we found.

Built-in grills get repaired in place. We don't need to pull the grill out of the island for most repairs, and when we do (some valve and manifold work requires it), we tell you first and protect the countertop.

What happens on a repair visit

  1. 1

    Tell us the symptoms

When you book, describe what's happening and send a photo of the model and serial tag if you can find it. That lets us bring the right parts the first time.

  2. 2

    Diagnose on site

We check gas supply and pressure, ignition spark, burner condition and valve function, and do a leak test on the connections we touch.

  3. 3

    Explain and quote

We show you the failed part, explain what it does, and tell you the cost before doing the work. If a cleaning would solve it, we say so.

  4. 4

    Repair

Parts on the truck get installed that visit. Special-order parts are ordered and we come back to install them.

  5. 5

    Test

Every burner gets lit and checked, all connections are leak tested, and we show you that it works.

Signs you need a repair, not just a cleaning

  • Any smell of gas around the grill when it's off or when it's running
  • A burner that lights and then goes out, or never lights at all
  • Knobs that spin freely, stick, or won't turn the flame down
  • Visible holes, splits or heavy flaking on the burners
  • A flame that stays low no matter how far you turn the knob
  • No spark at the electrode, even with a fresh battery
  • A hood that won't stay open or drops hard

If you smell gas, shut the supply off at the tank or the shutoff valve, don't try to light it, and call us. If the smell is strong or near the house, call the gas company first. Our soap test guide shows a safe way to check a connection yourself.

Parts: OEM, universal and discontinued

We use the manufacturer's parts whenever they're available, because they fit right and they last. For some older or discontinued grills, quality universal parts are the only option, and some of them are perfectly good. We'll tell you which one you're getting. Our guide on OEM vs. universal parts explains the trade-offs.

Some grills are past the point where repair makes sense: a firebox that has rusted through, a discontinued model with no valves left anywhere, or a repair list that adds up to more than the grill is worth. In that case we'll tell you plainly, and if you want, we can match a new grill to your existing cutout.

What repair doesn't cover

We repair the grill and its connection to the gas supply at the grill. We don't run new gas lines through the yard or into the house, and we don't do electrical work beyond the grill's own lights, igniters and rotisserie motor. Warranty claims are between you and the manufacturer; we're happy to give you a written description of the failure to send in. We also aren't a factory-authorized service center for any brand.

Grill repair questions

Do you carry parts, or do I have to wait?

We carry igniters, electrodes, batteries, common burners, valves, regulators and hoses for the brands we see most. Brand-specific or older parts sometimes need to be ordered, and we'll schedule a return visit to install them.

Can you repair a grill brand you don't list?

Usually, yes. Gas grills share a lot of basic parts and principles. Send us the model tag and we'll tell you whether we can get parts.

Is it worth repairing a 15 or 20 year old grill?

Often it is, especially if it's a well-built stainless grill in an island. A set of burners and an igniter can give it years more life. We'll be straight with you if it isn't. See our repair or replace guide.

Do you work on natural gas grills?

Yes, natural gas and propane. We work on the grill and its connection, not on the house's gas line.

Should I get a cleaning with the repair?

If the grill hasn't been cleaned in a while, it's worth doing both at once. Many burner and ignition problems come back fast in a dirty grill, and we already have it apart.

What does a repair cost?

It depends on the brand, the part and how much labor it takes. Call or text us with the symptoms and a photo of the model tag, and we'll give you an idea before we come out.
