Inland grills wear out differently

Away from the coast, salt mostly stops being the story. What takes over is heat, dust, hard water and heavy use. Summer afternoons in the valley run well into the 90s and past 100, a black hood sitting in full sun gets hot enough to cook the grease film on the inside into a hard crust, and the dust that blows in sticks to all of it.

Many homes here have grills that work hard. Weekend carne asada, big family gatherings and holiday cookouts mean a lot of fat dripping through the heat plates. When the grease path clogs, it pools in the firebox and turns into flare-ups. Most of the grill-fire calls we get in this region trace back to that.

The foothill communities along the San Gabriel Mountains (Altadena, Sierra Madre, La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Monrovia, Glendora) add another layer: Santa Ana winds, wildfire ash, and the occasional rodent nest in a cabinet that backs onto a hillside.

Ash, wind and the foothills

The January 2025 Eaton fire hit Altadena hard, and ash from it settled on patios across Pasadena and much of the western San Gabriel Valley. Santa Ana wind events still carry dust and ash down the canyons most fall and winter seasons. Fine ash works into burner ports and pilot assemblies, and once it gets wet it turns into a paste that's mildly corrosive on steel.

If your grill or outdoor kitchen sat through an ash event, have it fully cleaned and have the burners, valves and gas connections checked before cooking. Our guide to Santa Ana winds and ash explains what's safe to handle yourself. If the damage goes further than a cleaning, restoration or a replacement may make more sense, and we'll be straight with you about which.

East LA & San Gabriel Valley questions

How far east do you go?

Out through Pomona, Claremont, La Verne and San Dimas, and south through Whittier, Hacienda Heights, Rowland Heights and Diamond Bar.

My grill had ash on it for weeks. Is it safe to use?

Clean it thoroughly first and check that the burners light evenly with a blue flame. If you see yellow flames, smell gas, or the igniter won't catch, have it looked at. We can do both in one visit.

Do you work on freestanding grills, or just built-ins?

Both. We service carts and freestanding grills from Weber to high-end brands, plus built-ins of every size.

How much will it cost?

That depends on the grill's size, brand, condition and parts. Call or text, or send a couple of photos, and we'll give you a quote.
