The shared grill problem

A community grill in Alhambra might see a dozen different households in a single summer weekend. Each one scrapes the grates a little, and nobody empties the grease tray. By August the tray is overflowing, the heat plates are buried, and flare-ups are leaving scorch marks on the hood. That's a fire risk as well as an unpleasant cooking surface.

For HOA boards and managers, we recommend cleaning shared grills at least quarterly during the warm months, with a check of the gas connections and igniters each time. We document the condition, flag anything unsafe, and tell you if a grill is getting close to replacement. Our HOA grill maintenance guide has a sample schedule you can take to your board.

What a common-area visit covers

  • Grates, heat plates and burners removed and degreased
  • Grease tray and drip cup emptied, scraped and cleaned
  • Igniters tested, electrodes cleaned or replaced
  • Gas connections leak-tested
  • Knobs, handles and hinges checked for damage
  • Stainless wiped down and polished
  • Photos and notes sent to the manager or board

Older homes and long-serving grills

On Alhambra's single-family streets, a lot of the built-ins we see have been there a long time. The usual list: igniters that stopped working years ago (so the owner lights it with a long match), burners with rust holes along the bottom, and a hood that won't stay up because the hinge spring is gone. Most of that is very fixable.

If you're lighting your grill by hand, we'd suggest getting the ignition sorted first. See igniter replacement. And if your hood slams shut, we can usually find a replacement hinge or spring. More on that at hood, hinge and handle repair.

Alhambra grill questions

We manage a building with two shared grills. Can you invoice the HOA directly?

Yes. We work with boards and management companies and can set up recurring visits billed to the association.

Do residents need to stay away while you work?

We'll rope off the grill area while it's apart and wet. The rest of the pool or courtyard stays usable.

Can you service a grill on an upstairs balcony?

Usually. We bring drop cloths and catch everything. If your building limits work hours or grill use on balconies, let us know before the visit.

How do I get a quote?

Call or text us, or send a couple of photos. For HOAs, tell us how many grills and how often you'd like them serviced. Pricing depends on size, brand, condition and parts.
