A grilling calendar for Covina
Covina sits right in the middle of the San Gabriel Valley, far enough from the coast that summer afternoons regularly run into the high 90s and beyond. Grills here don't get a real off-season, but they do follow a rhythm. Use picks up around Memorial Day, peaks through the Fourth of July and Labor Day, and slows down once the fall winds come through.
Timing a cleaning around that rhythm makes a difference. A grill cleaned in spring goes into summer with clear burner ports and an empty grease path. The same grill cleaned in August has already spent three months cooking on top of last year's buildup.
Through the year
- 1
Late spring: the big cleaning
Full teardown before the heavy season. Spiders that moved into burner tubes over the winter get cleared out, and igniters get tested.
- 2
Midsummer: watch the grease
Empty the drip tray and scrape the grates after every few cooks. If flare-ups start, the firebox is loading up. See flare-ups and grease fires.
- 3
Fall: after the winds
Santa Ana winds leave dust and leaves in and under grills. Clear it out and check the cover is still doing its job.
- 4
Winter: a lighter touch
Keep the grill covered and dry, light it now and then, and book repairs while schedules are open. Our off-season guide has more.
Covina's older homes and yards
Many Covina neighborhoods date from the postwar years, when the city grew out from its old downtown and former citrus land. The streets around Citrus Avenue and downtown have older bungalows and ranch homes with deep lots, while newer tracts fill in toward the north and east. We see everything from twenty-year-old built-ins under a patio cover to freestanding cart grills and smokers parked against a garage wall.
Older yards also tend to have older gas setups. If your grill has never burned quite right, the regulator, hose or a kinked flex line may be the cause rather than the grill itself.

Covina questions
How often should my grill be cleaned?
For most Covina households, once a year before summer. If you cook several times a week, twice. Our guide on how often to clean a grill goes into it.
Do you service smokers?
Yes. Pellet grills, offset smokers and gas smokers, including auger and igniter problems on pellet units.
Can you clean a grill that's under a wood patio cover?
Yes. We protect the area and work carefully around the cover. If grease has stained the beams above the grill, we'll point it out.
How much is a maintenance plan?
It depends on the grill and how often you want us out. Call or text us, or send photos, for a quote.
