Grill Light Repair

Hood lights and illuminated knobs are what make a premium built-in usable after dark. They also live in a box of heat, grease and humidity, so they fail more than anything else electrical on a grill.

Kinds of grill lighting

Most premium built-ins have one or both of these. Interior lights are usually halogen bulbs in sealed housings in the hood or the back of the firebox, behind a glass lens, switched on from the control panel or automatically when the hood opens. Control panel lights backlight the knobs, often in blue, red or white LEDs. Both are low voltage, typically fed by a 12-volt transformer plugged into a 120-volt outlet or hardwired in the island.

Brands like Lynx, Twin Eagles, Alfresco, Hestan, Blaze and AOG all use some version of this.

Why grill lights fail

Most common first.

Burned-out bulb

Halogen bulbs fail with age and heat. It's the simplest fix and the first thing to check.

Tripped GFCI or breaker

Outdoor kitchen outlets are GFCI protected. Moisture trips them, and everything on the grill goes dark.

Failed transformer

The transformer that steps power down to 12 volts gets hot and dies. Lights and sometimes ignition go out together.

Moisture in the housing

Fogged or water-filled lens housings short out bulbs and corrode sockets. Common with grills left uncovered or rinsed with a hose.

Grease-baked lens or melted socket

Grease on the lens can overheat the housing, and sockets near the firebox can melt or crack.

Damaged wiring or switch

Wires running near the firebox get brittle. Rodents chew them. Switches wear out.

What you can safely check

  • Reset the GFCI outlet the grill plugs into, and check the breaker for the outdoor kitchen.
  • Make sure the grill's power cord or transformer is plugged in. Gardeners and pool crews sometimes unplug them.
  • With the grill off and cool, remove the lens cover (usually a few screws or a clip) and look at the bulb. A dark or broken filament means it's burned out.
  • Replace the bulb with the exact type and wattage listed in the manual or printed on the old bulb. Don't touch a halogen bulb with bare fingers; skin oil shortens its life.
  • Look for water or fog inside the housing. If there's moisture, let it dry before reinstalling.

How we repair grill lighting

  1. 1

    Trace the circuit

We check power at the outlet, the transformer output, the switch, and the socket, so we replace what actually failed.

  2. 2

    Replace bulbs and sockets

Burned-out bulbs get replaced with the right type. Melted or corroded sockets get replaced too.

  3. 3

    Reseal housings

Lens gaskets are cleaned or replaced so moisture stays out.

  4. 4

    Replace transformers and switches

Failed transformers and worn switches get matched replacements.

  5. 5

    Dress the wiring

Wires are routed away from heat and secured, and any damaged sections replaced.

Keeping them working

Most light failures we see trace back to water and grease. Keep a hose and pressure washer away from the hood and control panel, wipe grease off the lens when you clean the grill, and close the hood after cooking. A cover helps keep rain and sprinkler spray out, though near the beach it can trap moisture. Our grill cover guide explains when one helps. A regular professional cleaning includes wiping and checking the lens housings.

Grill light questions

My lights and igniter both stopped working. Is it the same problem?

On many 120-volt grills, yes. They share a power supply. Check the GFCI outlet first, then the transformer.

Can I use an LED bulb instead of halogen?

Sometimes, if one is made to fit the socket and handle the heat. Some LED replacements don't survive the temperatures inside a hood. We usually stick with the original type.

Why is there water in my light housing?

Usually a failed gasket, rain or sprinkler spray, or the grill being rinsed with a hose. Moisture will keep killing bulbs until the housing is resealed.

Are LED knob lights repairable?

Often. The LEDs themselves rarely fail; it's usually the power supply, a loose connector or moisture. Some brands replace the whole lighting harness.

How much does grill light repair cost?

It depends on the brand, what failed and how hard it is to reach. Send photos and the model number and we'll quote it.
