Wind and views on the hill
Signal Hill is about two square miles, and the hill itself is the main feature. The homes up top, many built since the 1980s on land that used to be oil fields, were designed for the view, and a lot of them have outdoor kitchens on terraces and decks that look out over Long Beach and the harbor. Those spots catch more wind than anywhere around. On a breezy day that means grit and leaves blowing into an uncovered grill, and in fall it can mean ash when there's fire somewhere in the region.
Wind is also hard on burners. A grill on an exposed terrace can have trouble staying lit or holding temperature on gusty evenings, and people often assume the grill is failing. Sometimes it is, but a dirty burner or a partly blocked port makes the problem much worse. Our page on low flame and weak heat walks through the usual causes.
Townhomes and shared grills
Much of the newer housing on Signal Hill is in townhome and condo communities with HOAs, and many of them have a shared grill near a pool or clubhouse. Shared grills get used hard and cleaned rarely. We set up community grill service on a schedule, keep notes on each unit, and flag safety issues to the manager before they turn into a complaint.
Private patio grills in these communities are usually compact. We work on small decks and patios regularly and keep the mess on drop cloths.

Learn moreHow we keep it clean
Our degreasers are biodegradable and food-safe, and we use hot water and steam where they do the job. Grease and rinse water are contained and hauled away rather than washed down the slope or into the street. On a hillside property, that also keeps a greasy film off the stairs and walkways below.
Signal Hill questions
Our HOA has six grills. Can you service them all in one trip?
Yes. We schedule community grills together and can set up recurring visits.
My fire pit goes out when the wind picks up. Can it be fixed?
Often. It may be a weak thermocouple, a dirty burner or a pilot that needs adjusting. A wind guard can also help on exposed patios.
Do you service the rest of the outdoor kitchen?
We handle the grill, side burners, griddles, pizza ovens and gas appliances. Tell us what's in the island when you call.
What does service cost?
It depends on the grill or appliance, its condition and parts. Call or text, or send photos, for a quote.
