Belmont ShoreGrill Cleaning & BBQ Repair

Narrow lots, alley garages and the beach two blocks away. Grills in Belmont Shore live in a small space and a salty one, and they need a little more attention than grills a few miles inland.

Belmont Shore is the Long Beach neighborhood between Second Street and Ocean Boulevard, squeezed between the beach on one side and Alamitos Bay on the other. The housing is mostly small single-family homes, duplexes and courtyard units on tight lots, a lot of them with the main access off the alley behind. Backyards are compact. A built-in grill here is usually a short island along a fence or tucked against the garage, and plenty of people cook on a freestanding grill on a side patio or upstairs deck.

What makes the Shore hard on grills is that there is water on both sides. The ocean breeze and the bay put salt on everything, and the marine layer keeps it damp. We regularly open grills here that look fine from the outside and have burners coming apart underneath.

Signs salt is getting to your grill

Any of these is worth a look before it turns into a parts bill.

  • Brown or orange speckling on the hood and doors that wipes off and comes back
  • Knobs that are stiff to turn, or a bezel with rust bleeding around it
  • Flakes of metal on the heat plates when you lift the grates
  • One burner that lights weaker or with a ragged, yellow flame
  • Hood hinges or handles that squeak, bind or wobble
  • An igniter that clicks fine but never catches

What we do about it

The answer for most grills in the Shore is a regular schedule. Every six months or so, we pull the internals, clean off the salt-and-grease film that holds moisture against the metal, check burners for thinning, and polish the stainless. Catching a burner early means replacing one part instead of three. Our maintenance plans handle the reminders for you.

For grills that have already gone too long, restoration covers new burners, heat plates and grates, freed-up hardware, and a stainless polish. If the cookbox itself is pitted through, we'll say so and talk about replacing it with a grill that's built for salt air. Our guide to picking a grill for a coastal home covers what to look for.

Small spaces, no mess

We work out of the alley when that's where the access is, and we keep everything on drop cloths. Degreasers are biodegradable and food-safe, and the rinse water leaves with us. That matters more here than almost anywhere: the storm drains on these streets empty into Alamitos Bay or straight onto the beach. If you share a wall or a courtyard with neighbors, they won't know we were there.

Belmont Shore questions

Can you get to a grill on an upstairs deck?

Usually, yes. Parts carry up by hand. Let us know about stairs and access when you book.

Is my grill too rusted to save?

Surface rust and staining almost always come off. If the firebox has holes or the frame is crumbling, repair stops making sense. Send photos and we'll give you an honest read.

Do you work on the fire pit too?

Yes. Gas fire pits near the beach get the same corrosion on burners and igniters. See our fire pit service.

Is there a charge just to come look?

Pricing depends on the grill and what it needs. Call or text, or send a couple of photos, and we'll explain what to expect before we come out.
