Downey sits between the Rio Hondo and the San Gabriel River, and most of it was built out in the 1940s and 50s with ranch homes on decent-sized lots. The northern part of town, especially around Downey Avenue and the streets near Rio Hondo Country Club, has larger homes, many of which have been extensively remodeled. In the last couple of decades, a lot of Downey backyards have gotten serious outdoor kitchens: long islands with a built-in grill, a side burner, sometimes a griddle and a fridge, under a covered patio.
Downey also has real summer heat. It's far enough inland that afternoons run hot, and grills in full sun take a beating. Rubber gaskets dry out, plastic knobs and bezels crack, and the paint on freestanding grills starts to peel.
When a grill is worth restoring
We do a lot of restoration in Downey. It's the right call for a good grill that's been used hard and cleaned rarely. Typical signs: burners that flake or have holes, heat plates rusted through, grates that are half rust, knobs missing, and a stainless hood that's dull and stained. If the cookbox and frame are still solid, all of that is replaceable.
A restoration is a full teardown. Every internal part comes out, the firebox gets degreased down to bare metal, worn parts get replaced with OEM or quality universal parts, and the stainless gets polished. When we're done, the grill lights cleanly and heats evenly again. If the firebox itself has failed, we'll tell you, and talk about replacement instead.

Downey questions
Is restoration better than buying a new grill?
For a well-made grill with a solid firebox, usually yes. For an inexpensive grill with a rusted cookbox, replacement often makes more sense. We'll give you our honest opinion.
How long does a restoration take?
Most are done in a single visit. If special parts have to be ordered, it may take a second trip.
Do you work on Weber and other cart grills?
Yes. Weber is one of the most common grills we see. See our Weber page.
How much does it cost?
That depends on the grill's size, brand, condition and parts. Call or text, or send photos, for a quote.
