Old hills, old houses, everyday grills
Echo Park is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, built up in the late 1800s and early 1900s around the lake that gives it its name. North of Sunset, the land rises into steep hills, including Elysian Heights, with Angelino Heights just to the south, and Victorians, Craftsman bungalows and small houses stacked up narrow streets and public stairways. Dodger Stadium and Elysian Park sit just to the east.
Outdoor cooking here is mostly practical. A freestanding gas grill on a back porch, a kettle on a terrace, a grill shared by a triplex, a smoker somebody built a little shed for. They get used often and cleaned rarely, which is exactly the situation we're good at fixing.
How a typical Echo Park visit goes
Most visits here are a cleaning with a repair or two along the way.
- 1
Look first
We check how the grill lights and how the flames look before touching anything, so we know what we're dealing with.
- 2
Take it apart
Grates, heat plates, burners and grease tray come out. The firebox is scraped and degreased.
- 3
Fix what we find
Dead igniters, clogged or rusted burners and cracked hoses are the common ones. We carry those parts and replace them with your approval.
- 4
Put it back and test
Reassemble, leak test the gas connections and fire every burner.
Keeping an older grill going
Plenty of grills we see in Echo Park are mid-range freestanding models that have been outside for ten years or more. They're often worth fixing. Burners, igniters, grates and heat plates are wear parts, and swapping them can make a tired grill cook like new. Our burner replacement and grate replacement pages explain what's involved.
Sometimes it isn't worth it, usually when the firebox has rusted through or the frame is falling apart. We'll tell you plainly. Our guide how long do grills last gives realistic lifespans for different types.

Learn moreEcho Park questions
My house is up a public staircase with no driveway. Can you still come?
Yes. We carry everything by hand. Let us know where to park and how to reach the house when you book.
Is it worth cleaning a cheaper grill?
Often, yes. A cleaning plus a new igniter or burner can add years to a grill, and it's usually a fraction of the effort of replacing it. We'll give you our honest opinion.
Do you do charcoal grills?
Yes. Kettles, kamados and smokers get cleaned too.
What does a visit cost?
That depends on the grill's size, brand, condition and any parts. Call or text us or send a couple of photos and we'll quote it.
