Los Feliz is a Los Angeles neighborhood split in two by Los Feliz Boulevard. Above it, the hills climb toward Griffith Park and the Observatory, with large period homes, mid-century houses and a few famous landmarks, including Frank Lloyd Wright's Ennis House. Below it, the flats around Hillhurst and Vermont have Spanish bungalows, duplexes and older apartment buildings.
Grills in the two halves get different treatment, but they share one thing: the park next door.
Living next to Griffith Park
Griffith Park is one of the largest urban parks in the country, and it's mostly dry chaparral and oak woodland. That brings wildlife and dust down into the yards that border it.
- Spiders and insects. Burner tubes and venturis are a favorite place for spiders to build webs. A blocked venturi causes weak, yellow or lopsided flames, and in bad cases a flame that burns back outside the burner. See spiders in burner tubes.
- Rodents. Rats and mice nest in grill cabinets and chew wiring and hoses, especially in grills that sit idle for weeks.
- Ash and dust. Fires in or near the park have dropped ash across Los Feliz more than once. Dust from dry hillsides settles on grills year-round and turns into a paste with grease.
How we deal with a blocked or nested grill
- 1
Shut off and inspect
Gas off, grates and heat plates out, and a look at the burners, venturis, wiring and hose.
- 2
Clear the burners
Webs and debris cleaned from tubes and ports. Burners that have rusted through get replaced.
- 3
Repair damage
Chewed igniter wires, hoses or regulators replaced. Nests and droppings removed and the cabinet cleaned.
- 4
Test
Leak test on every connection, then each burner fired to confirm an even blue flame.

Learn moreUp the hill
Streets above Los Feliz Boulevard get steep and narrow quickly, and some homes are reached by long driveways or stairs. We carry what we need and work wherever the grill is. Many of these homes have outdoor kitchens that were added in later renovations, with a mix of brands. Our techs know Lynx, Viking, DCS, Fire Magic and others.
Down in the flats, jobs are smaller in scale: a freestanding grill on a bungalow patio, a griddle in a narrow side yard, a grill shared by a fourplex. Same thorough cleaning, less hauling.
Los Feliz questions
My grill has a yellow, lazy flame. What's wrong?
Most often a partly blocked venturi from spider webs, especially this close to the park. It can also be a misadjusted air shutter or a gas supply problem. Our guide on yellow flames explains the possibilities.
There was ash all over my patio after the last fire. Should I clean the grill before using it?
Yes. Ash clogs burner ports and stains stainless if it gets damp. A cleaning first is the safe option.
How do I keep rodents out of my grill?
Use it regularly, keep it clean, empty the grease tray and don't store food or bags of charcoal nearby. A snug cover helps a little.
What does it cost?
Pricing depends on the grill's size, brand, condition and any parts. Call or text us or send a couple of photos for a quote.
