Access comes first

The Hollywood Hills stretch across the eastern Santa Monica Mountains, from the canyons above West Hollywood to the area around Lake Hollywood and Griffith Park. Laurel Canyon, Nichols Canyon, Beachwood Canyon and the streets off Mulholland are all part of it. Many roads were laid out decades ago and never widened. Parking is scarce, a lot of houses step down the slope from the street, and the outdoor space is often a deck or terrace hung off the back.

That shapes how we work. We plan for parking before we arrive, pack light enough to carry everything in, and set up on whatever level the grill is on. When you book, tell us about stairs, gates, a shared driveway or a street where trucks can't stop. It saves time for everyone.

Ash, wind and dry months

When Santa Ana winds blow or a wildfire burns anywhere in the region, ash settles on decks across the hills. It's mildly alkaline and gritty, and when the marine layer or a light rain dampens it on stainless, it can leave stains that don't wipe off. It also clogs burner ports and gets into the venturi tubes. After a heavy ash event, a grill should be cleaned before it's used again. Our guide to Santa Ana winds, ash and your outdoor kitchen covers what to do and what to avoid.

Wildlife in the canyon

Coyotes, raccoons and plenty of rats live in these canyons. Rats in particular like the shelter and the smell of an idle grill. They nest under the burners, chew igniter wires and sometimes gnaw through gas hoses. Spiders like the burner tubes too, which leads to weak or yellow flames and occasionally a flame burning outside the burner. If your grill smells off, lights unevenly or has droppings in the cabinet, see spider and insect blockages and our notes on rodents in grills, then call us before using it.

Hollywood Hills questions

Can you reach a grill on a lower deck with no side access?

Usually, yes. We carry tools and supplies through the house or down exterior stairs and protect floors along the way.

Should I have my grill cleaned after nearby wildfire smoke and ash?

Yes, if ash has settled on it. Cleaning it before you cook removes ash from the burners and grates and keeps it from staining the stainless.

Is it worth cleaning a grill at a rental or vacation house up here?

Yes, and more often than at a primary home. Guests use the grill hard and empty houses attract rodents. Our rental grill care guide has more.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the size, brand and condition of the grill, and on any parts needed. Call or text us or send a couple of photos for a quote.
